Luke T from Valdosta Georgia

Introducing Luke T from Valdosta Georgia y’all!  Luke is our next Gift a Voice recipient!  We are blessed and grateful to be able to assist Luke in communicating his wants and needs to family members and those around him.  Imagine knowing what you want to say and not being able to articulate it?  Let’s help this handsome young man!!

Luke T is a happy, energetic and curious 2 year old. He brings great joy to his family and friends. He lives with his mother, father and 8 year old sister, Maggie. Luke appears to be a normal little boy in every way, except that he does not speak. It is obvious that he wants to talk. Whenever prompted, he makes a genuine effort to try to repeat words or sounds. However, very few utterances or approximations are clear enough to be called words. He does get frustrated when he can’t communicate his wants or needs.

He interacts well with other children and adults, making eye contact, smiling and gesturing in lieu of words. He loves to go to the park and swing. He also likes to go to the mall. He plays peek-a-boo, chase, and jumps on the trampoline. He adores his big sister, b.k.a. “Gee Gee”. He enjoys going to gymnastics class and playing with puppies.

Please share with your Facebook Friends y’all!! Thanks much!

Let’s Clarify That

The article in today’s Sparks Tribune about the Foundation’s Gift A Voice project prompted some questions that I’d like to address.  Here are the specific questions asked:

  • The Foundation’s legal status? – Turning Views Foundation is a Nevada nonprofit corporation.
  • The Foundation’s tax status? – Turning Views Foundation is awaiting 501(c)3 designation from the IRS. ***Update**** The Foundation is a 501(c)3 entity!
  • The $1000 necessary, considering it is used/donated iPhones and a $200 software program. Can you break down this figure? –

Direct wording from the Sparks Tribune article is – “The cost of an iPhone with the necessary applications installed and a  speaker to amplify the sound is about $1,000.”

The AAC Application, Proloquo2Go, costs $189.99 from the iTunes store. This is a specialized Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) application.

There are 3 versions of an iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.  An iPhone 3Gs that’s 8GB starts at $99, an iPhone4 that’s 16B starts at $199 and an iPhone4 that’s 32GB starts at $299.  An 8GB iPod touch is $229, a 32GB is $299 and a 64GB is $399. There are actually 6 versions of the iPad.  A 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi is $499, a 32GB iPad with Wi-Fi is $599, a 64 GB with Wi-Fi is $699.  A 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G is $629, a 32 GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G is $729 and a 64 GB with Wi-Fi + 3G is $829.

The speaker/case, iMainGo, for the iPhone and iPod touch costs $39.99 from Amazon.  I have not priced cases and/or speakers for the iPad as of yet.

My “about $1,000” statement was my own attempt of picking a generalized figure for the general public.  For the Foundation this amount will vary depending on each recipients needs and whether or not we are using a donated device.  Being that this is a very young nonprofit organization, having only had one recipient to date and the fact that there are so many different price points the figures used throughout our website are generalized.

The following is a break down of items purchased and donated for gifting to 6 year old Elizebeth in Missouri who is hearing and speech impaired:

  • Donated 3G iPhone
  • USB Power Adapter – $29.00
  • iMainGo Speaker/Case – $39.99
  • Proloquo2Go Application – $189.99
  • Shoulder Bag – $19.00
  • Cost of Shipping – (Not shipped yet – Hope to ship today or tomorrow)

Thank you very much to the individual who asked these questions.  We will be adding a page on the website with a biography and photo for each of the Board of Directors in the next few days.  If anyone has additional questions or would like further clarification please don’t hesitate to ask in the Comments below, on the Different iz Good Facebook Page or via email to info @ turningviews . org.

Recycle and Give a Voice to those Without

Let’s give ’em something to talk about y’all!  It’s official! We’ve just received our first media coverage about our recycling project.  Thanks to Reno News & Review for taking an interest in Turning Views Foundation’s efforts to collect last generation iPhones, iPods and (soon) iPads. These devises are much much more than a phone or a device to house all your favorite songs.  They literally give a voice to those without one.  We are in the midst of a communication evolution that has shifted in such a way to include a segment of the population like never before.  1 of every 8,000 people in the United States has a communication disability. You can read more about my thoughts on this topic at The Evolution of Communication.

These mobile, compact and cool Apple devices can be used as speech generating devices for those that communicate with sign language or who aren’t able to articulate words.  By installing an application like Proloquo2Go one can communicate and express themselves using a modern hand held device.  The community for socializing and conducting business has exponentially increased for those who have a communication disabilites.  Insurance companies and Medicaid do not cover these; but do cover big clunky speech generating devices that cost anywhere from $5,000-$10,000. Let’s be clear here though.  We do understand that there are instances where these devices are the right fit for someone.  We are not discounting their usefulness and need.

We would like to officially thank Robin Snegg Krueger with Disability Resources/New2U Computers, 50 E. Greg St in Sparks, Nevada and Alicia Detriech of Mac-O-Rama, 4690 Longley Lane, Reno, Nevada for their involvement with our “Gift a Voice” Project! If you are local to Reno, you can drop off your last generation devices at either of these locations.  Alicia, owner of Mac-O-Rama (an authorized Apple service provider), will reset the devices so no worries about your personal information.

If you are not local to Reno you can mail your device to Mac-O-Rama, For Turning Views Foundation, 4690 Longley Lane #22, Reno, NV 89502 (make sure it’s packaged to protect!)  Thanks and we would love to hear your Comments!

November 13th is World Kindness Day

World Kindness day is HERE!  You can read more about World Kindness here.  Practicing kindness is a great way to bring families, friends and neighbors together. Here are some ideas for your celebration  (Ideas for this were excerpted from this World Kindness Day post.)

1. Leave something special on the neighbor’s doorstep. Flowers, a baked good, an invitation to share a meal.

2. Make your kid’s bed. Do the one chore your kid hates the most for him/her.

3. Make a contribution toward the Turning Views Foundation and Different iz Good movement. Change and one dollar bills from piggy banks count too. Don’t forget about the Different iz Good store!

4. Write a thank you or draw a picture for someone you love. Tell them what you love about them and thank them for being themselves.

5. Pay the bill for the car behind you at the coffee or fast food drive thru, let your child give the money from the back window.

6. Pick up some trash. Spend an hour cleaning up a park, school, or even your neighborhood.

7. Post on a Friend’s Facebook why you are grateful to have them in your life.

8. Smile at 10 people today.

9. Visit a grandparent or elderly friend.

10. Call a friend or family member just to say “Hey” and tell them you are grateful to have them in your life!

Come on over and add to our list and also share with us how your World Kindness Day celebration went in the comments.

Voice Off Day – Saturday, October 23, 2010

Saturday, October 23rd is Make A Difference Day!!

Here’s how we can make a difference on October 23rd.  Participate in VOICE OFF DAY!!  Spend some time Saturday NOT using your voice or your mouth to communicate. Choose 20, 40 or 60 minutes during the day Saturday and ONLY communicate using technology to bring more awareness to how beneficial technology and social networking are for non verbal and speech impaired. Let’s really experience what it’s like to not have a voice and how technology and social networking have given a voice to the nonverbal and speech impaired.

Post in your Facebook and Twitter stream about VOICE OFF DAY in honor of Make a Difference Day.   Post our slogan “Different iz Good . . . Spread the Word” with a link to our website or Facebook page.  Do this at least 3 times throughout the day on Saturday!!

Use the “share” button at the bottom of this page to tell your friends and connections about our VOICE OFF campaign to Make a Difference on October 23rd! Download the Different iz Good logo and use it for your image/avatar on Facebook and Twitter all day on Saturday, the 23rd!  To download or use the image url simply hold down your control key while clicking on the image.  You will get a menu where you can copy the image or copy the image location.
